Orbx produces high-fidelity simulated environments, ranging from detailed flight simulations over Brisbane to the prehistoric landscapes of Jurassic World: Archipelago. To support these massive, immersive worlds, they required an infrastructure capable of handling extreme scale and real-time data.

The Challenge

By early 2024, Orbx’s infrastructure was fractured across a multi-cloud and on-premises environment. This complexity prevented cross-platform queries, created restrictive data silos, and made it impossible to scale reliably for major product launches.

The Solution: 100% Cloud-Native Architecture

Orbx engaged Sakura Sky to re-architect its environment to be entirely cloud-native on Google Cloud. The new architecture focused on automation and high-performance data handling:

  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Automated deployment pipelines using Cloud Build to ensure rapid, reliable, and repeatable updates.
  • Compute Elasticity: Leveraged Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) to dynamically scale compute resources in real-time based on player demand.
  • Real-Time Data Stack: Implemented a high-throughput pipeline to ingest massive streams of positional data using Cloud Bigtable and Cloud SQL.

The Results

The migration to a unified Google Cloud platform delivered immediate improvements across every key operational metric:

  • Velocity: Achieved a 400% increase in release velocity, transitioning from irregular deployment windows to rapid, continuous updates.
  • Efficiency: Reduced total cloud expenditure by 30% through consolidated billing and automated resource scaling.
